Born in Kiel, Germany, I spent my 11 first year in Germany. At the end of 1936 the family moved to Sweden, the country of my mother. My education I have mainly from Swedish schools and universities. Early in 1950 I graduated in chemistry from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Please, don't ask me about chemistry! I worked for 18 years in various positions in what now has become one of the largest pulp, paper, and lumber companies, The Swedish Cellulose Company, SCA. My last five years I started their first information systems department.
Having established myself in that field from the practical side in the 1960's I left my job at SCA in order to study my new profession. When going back to university I hoped to learn what I had been offering a lot of other professionals within SCA as support in their job. What we as IS/IT professionals offer people in other professions or in their role of citizens I still try to understand. By now I am, since the end of 1991, retired from a chair in Information and Computer Science at the university of Lund in southern Sweden. Still I have kept and keep in touch with the information systems field.
