Unpacking the social dimensions of external interruptions
In the seminar, Rikard Harr will present his conference paper (co-authored with Victor Kaptelinin) from Group 2007, a conference held in Sanibel Island, Florida, 4-7 November.
The paper systematically explores the social dimension of external interruptions of human activities. Interruptions and interruption handling are key issues in human-computer interaction (HCI) and computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) research. However, existing research has almost exclusively dealt with effects of interruptions on individual tasks. The paper calls for expanding the scope of analysis by including the effect of interruptions on the social context. Four facets of the social “ripple effect” of interruptions are identified: location, communication, collaboration, and interpersonal relation. The paper also involves a discussion concerning the advantages of extending the notion of interruptions and its implications for future research.
The presentation of the conference paper will be followed by a short report of the Group 2007 conference.
