Steve Sawyer, School of Information Sciences and Technology, The Pennsylvania State University, USA: Social informatics and studies of computerization: Overview, debate and one perspective

Abstract
Through this talk I pursue three objectives. The first objective is to highlight the principles of social informatics as an approach to study computerization. To do this I draw on the rapidly accumulating work in this area. The second objective is to contrast the social informatics perspective with other major approaches to studying computerization. To this I draw on contemporary literatures on computerization. The third objective is to lay out several opportunities for social informatics scholars to push forward on studies of computerization. To do this I build on the contrasts developed through comparison with other approaches to help illustrate the potential for social informatics research to provide significant insights beyond what current approaches can provide.
