Harold G. Nelson, Ph.D., President and Co-founding Director of the Advanced Design Institute, Seattle: Advanced Design Theory

Design is often treated as merely an instrumental activity aimed at creating functional artifacts or activities in response to clearly defined performance specifications as defined by non-designers. Many serious unintended or undesirable consequences arise because of this limited and limiting approach to design however. In order to mitigate against the emergence of these critical issues, design needs to be reframed from a more holistic perspective - a whole systems design approach. Design, as a form of intentional behavior, can be considered as seminal to human agency as science or art because of the developing scholarship of advanced design theory.
