Andreas Lund: Massification of the Intangible: a PhD thesis overview

During the seminar, Andreas Lund will present the structure and contents of his soon-to-be PhD thesis with the tentative title "Massification of the Intangible. Embodied realism in information visualization design". The thesis address issues related to conditions for making sense of human-computer interaction experiences. It is argued that the materiality of artifacts is an important factor for the way people assign meaning to the them. Computerization changes the materiality of artifacts (demassification) and, hence, the conditions for making sense of them. It is suggested that there is a need for a theoretically grounded framework with the capacity to inform the design of non-arbitrary mappings from abstract information to concrete user interface representations (massification design). Embodied realism is explored as a candidate theoretical foundation for such a framework.
