Computer Input: innovation, modelling, and future exploration
This overview talk will review three aspects of the research on computer input in the Almaden USER (User Sciences and Experience Research) group: product innovation, theoretical modelling, and futuristic exploration.
On product innovation, I will briefly review the development of IBM ScrollPoint(TM), the mouse shipped with most of IBM desktop PCs. On theoretically modelling, I will present how we have applied Fitts' law to guide the design of the ATOMIK on-screen keyboard for pervasive computing devices. I will then discuss one limitation of Fitts' law and a thought experiment we conducted to overcome the limitation. This thought
experiment led to the discovery of the steering law, a quantitative human performance model of trajectory based human computer interaction tasks. On futuristic exploration, I will briefly discuss the pros and cons of using eye-gaze in human computer interaction and how it might be applied in future user interface design.
Overall, I will illustrate how we have conducted HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) research with significant scientific and practical impacts.
