A Virtual Realist Primer to Virtual World Design
I am currently at a point in my dissertation work where I am trying to assemble the outcome of a number of empirical studies into one reasonably coherent structure. Michael Heim is a major source of inspiration for me and his ideas contribute to the theoretical foundation of my research and thus to the "glue" that hopefully will keep my reasoning together. One of the issues I am confronting in this respect is how my own work relates to that of Michael Heim, what am I borrowing and what is my own contribution.
In this seminar I will present some of his ideas that I have found interesting in the exploration of design of virtual worlds and show the connection between these ideas and my own exploration of the concepts of structure, function and interaction in a theory of virtual world design. I have no new empirical material to present but will refer back to some work presented previously (especially from the Confuse project). No prior knowledge of my work (or Heim's) is, however, required in order to follow my presentation.
