Interpretive research: issues of methodology, theory and validity
This seminar will draw on specific study of the use of GIS for district-level administration in India, described in a recent paper (Walsham and Sahay, 1999). The study used contextualism as a broad research methodology, and actor-network theory was one of the theories drawn on for analytical purposes. The paper used explicit criteria for judging the validity of the published results. The case will be used as a basis for discussion of issues concerned with the conduct, analysis and publishing of interpretive research studies in the information systems field.
