Understanding the context of computer use: Towards a multi-level agentic model
The notion of context is currently of central concern for many researchers and developers in the field of informatics. A number of ideas and approaches have been proposed to understand the nature of context, including autopoiesis, phenomenology, hermeneutics, hypersystems, activity theory, situated action, distributed cognition, formative context, and center/ periphery distinction. However, the specific meaning and practical implications of context remain unclear. From my point of view, the meaning of context is clarified to some extent when it is considered as a multi-level phenomenon. At the same time this approach brings up a number of questions, including the nature of levels and their "vertical" coordination. These questions will be discussed at the seminar and a tentative outline of a multi-level agentic model of context will be presented.
