John Waterworth: Orange Sherbet Kisses

I would like to show a video which I think is of relevance and maybe of interest to the department.

I envisage introducing the film, showing it, then having a short discussion afterwards.

The video is called Orange Sherbet Kisses. It's about synaesthesia in people - experiencing sensations in one modality (e.g. sound) as if they were in another (e.g. vision).

The relevance of the video lies in the development of systems with the capacity to mimic synaesthesia in some respects. We can see recent work in multimedia and VR as a step towards such synaesthic systems: visualisation, auralisation, graphic display of motor performance, gestures for specification of musical composition, associating information with colour or spatial location to aid human memory, and many more.

The development of systems that give us the power to choose how sensations are perceived could enhance cognitive performance, human creativity, and artistic capabilities.
