Introduction to Human-Computer Interaction: Designing for User Experience

MSc HCI and D-level Informatics course

7.5 ECTS

The course will be conducted in English.

We will examine ways of approaching and understanding human-computer interaction, in the light of various current trends and views of how people act and communicate with and through computers and computerized devices. The course takes a broad perspective, focusing on  questions revolving around the concepts of user and experience. We will consider a range of interaction approaches and paradigms, including notions such as mental models, navigation of information space, and human-computer confluence.

Active reading will be combined with a design assignment and an individual essay assignment to facilitate students' active understanding of these topics. There will also be several group exercises to be carried out between classes.

The main text (which you will need to get) is Benyon, D., Turner, P. & Turner, S. (2005). Designing Interactive Systems. Addison Wesley. Harlow, UK. There will be specific reading assignments from the book, but all chapters are relevant to the course.

There will also be additional readings which will be provided as web links or as handouts in class.

The course leader is John Waterworth.
