Human-Computer Confluence

There are various ways in which technology can be designed to become "part of the self". The Report from an EU Consultation Workshop (Nov 2007) is a useful overview.

Tangible interface objects

Human Computer Confluence by Alois Ferscha, Stefan Resmerita and Clemens Holzmann. In Universal Access in Ambient Intelligence Environments. Lecture Notes in Computer Science. Springer Berlin / Heidelberg. Volume 4397/2007.

Brain-computer interaction

Brain-Computer Interaction by Christoph Guger. Techniques and also some interesting examples of experiments.

Brain-computer interface for Second Life. "A research team led by professor Jun’ichi Ushiba of the Keio University Biomedical Engineering Laboratory has developed a BCI system that lets the user walk an avatar through the streets of Second Life while relying solely on the power of thought."

Mind, brain, and emerging technologies

Positive Technology Journal is a blog by Andrea Gaggioli, which features a rapidly updated collection of articles and comments on new technologies, in areas such as Pervasive Computing, Brain-Computer Interaction, Presence, Wearables, Social Robotics, etc. Well worth visiting!

Natural-Born Cyborgs - a provocative and interesting book by Andy Clark about the role of information technology in making human intelligence, and its future. You can find many of his articles available on-line here.

Virtual assistants and companions

Another HCI text book worth looking at (not necessary to buy for course):

Preece, J., Rogers, Y., Sharp, H. Interaction Design: Beyond Human-Computer Interaction, second revised edition. NY: Wiley, 2007. The companion website has some interesting stuff, including "interactivities".
