Group exercise 3 - Public Information Spaces- presentations, October 8

Find an example of a public info space
a place where the physical affects the virtual and the virtual affects the physical.

  • Describe the physical and virtual aspects of such a space
  • How do they relate to each other?
  • How can it be considered as a whole, as an information space?
  • In what ways does a user interact with the space?

Navigation of the space
How do people find what they want?

  • Landmarks? Agents? Other ways?
  • Consider both physical and virtual aspects
  • Is the space well designed or not?

What do people do in addition to navigation?

  • How is navigation integrated into activities?
  • How does this space compare with other public spaces?

Methods: observation, participant use, reflection

  • Capture with photos
  • Tell a story with images (and words)

Future:

  • How could the information space be improved?
  • Better blending of physical and virtual into coherent UI?

  • Find at least 2 people (not yourselves, not course members, not family or friends) and
  • Interview them for up to 30 minutes about how they feel about their current mobile phone, and what they would like improved or added.
  • You will need to plan what to ask them in advance.
  • During the interview, have them demonstrate what they think are the best features, letting them talk you through it as they do so.
  • You might want to record what they say, with an audio or video recorder, or not.
  • Present your findings, including the method you used to get the information, how good it was, and how useful the information might be.
